Atalanta vs Marseille predictions

On Thursday night, one of Atalanta or Marseille will advance to the Europa League final. The first leg between these two teams gave very little away as to which of the duo will be competing in Dublin on May 22.

A 1-1 draw at the Stade Velodrome was a fair result. Atalanta took the lead through Gianluca Scamacca early on, but a brilliant goal from Chancel Mbemba brought Marseille level before the midway point of the first half.

It was a tight encounter in the south of France. Both teams had chances to take a 2-1 lead.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang went close just before half-time. Later, Ismaila Sarr had a goal chalked off for offside, while Azzedine Ounahi struck the bar as Marseille pushed for the winner.

It was not one-way traffic, however. Atalanta had opportunities of their own. With minutes left on the clock, Aleksei Miranchuk fired a shot just wide of the Marseille post. Had that gone in, the French team would be huge underdogs t o make it through.

Still, because the first leg was taking place in France, Atalanta are now favourites to progress. They will have home advantage on Thursday and have been the more consistent side over the course of the campaign.

Atalanta warmed up for the second leg by beating Salernitana 2-1 in Serie A. That result kept them in fifth place, narrowly ahead of Roma in the fight for Champions League qualification (Italy’s top flight has an additional place for next season).

The Serie A schedule did Atalanta no favours, though. Their match against Salernitana took place on Monday night. By contrast, Marseille (and Champions League-chasing Paris Saint-Germain) were given the weekend off in a bid to boost French teams’ prospects in Europe.

Could that give Marseille the edge? Perhaps, but Atalanta did not have to operate at full pelt against relegated Salernitana, the weakest team in Serie A.

Whichever side ultimately comes out on top, this promises to be a fascinating second leg.

Atalanta vs Marseille betting tips

Atalanta and Marseille will compete for a place in the Europa League final on Thursday night.

PSG to qualify - 8/13 (bet365)

A 1-1 draw at the Stade Velodrome was not a bad result for Marseille, but they may live to regret the opportunities they wasted last week.

Jean-Louis Gasset, their manager, admitted as much in his post-match press conference. “I am not completely satisfied because we had two or three chances to win the match 2-1,” he said. “Then [if we had scored a second] we would have been satisfied.”

Atalanta will draw confidence from Marseille’s record on the road, which is pretty dismal overall. Indeed, in Ligue 1 they rank third in the home table and second-bottom in the away standings. Remarkably, no side in the division has collected fewer points at opposition grounds than Marseille.

We have seen the same pattern in the Europa League. Marseille have won just one of their six away games in this competition. Before the 1-1 draw with Atalanta, they had an 83.3 percent winning record at home.

With the majority of the supporters behind them at the Gewiss Stadium, Atalanta can book their spot in the Europa League final by triumphing within 90 minutes.

Tip Atalanta to win at 3/4 with Sky Bet

Over 2.5 goals - 4/5 (BetMGM)

In many ways it was a surprise that there were only two goals at the Stade Velodrome last week.

Marseille scored 26 times in their 12 Europa League games prior to the semi-final first leg - an average of more than two per match.

Atalanta are an even more attack-minded side under Gian Piero Gasperini, one of the most underrated coaches in Europe. Only Inter and AC Milan have scored more goals in Serie A, while Atalanta recently struck three past Liverpool at Anfield.

This match should contain more goals than the first clash. There are no second chances after Thursday, and if one of these two teams find themselves behind at some point, they will have to push forward in a bid to get back into the match.

Marseille carry a threat on the counter-attack despite their awful record on their travels, while Atalanta routinely create plenty of opportunities at home.

Gianluca Scamacca to score any time - 13/8 (bet365)

Scamacca was the man who put Atalanta ahead in the tie last week. It was his sixth in this season’s Europa League, a tally that only Romelu Lukaku and Marseille’s Aubameyang can better.

Scamacca was also on target in the victory over Salernitana, as Atalanta came from a goal down to win 2-1.

The Italy international had a frustrating spell at West Ham United last season, but he has got back to his best this term. With Euro 2024 on the horizon, that is good news for his country as well as his club.

Scamacca seems to have reached top form during the run-in. In his last 12 appearances in all competitions, the striker has found the back of the net on 10 occasions.
